Diplomates, American Board of Internal Medicine

Specialist In The Care Of Adults!

The above statement defines an internist. Internists have completed at least two or more years of training beyond their internship year. They are not just doctors of the "inside organs." They are trained to take a comprehensive approach to understand the whole person and their medical problems. They are highly skilled detectives when it comes to searching for clues to the cause of a particular disease or disorder. As a pediatrician specializes in the care of children, an internist specializes in the care of adults. An internist treats both acute and chronic illnesses, everything from the common cold to serious life threatening emergencies; they also have training in preventative and alternative medicine. An internist also coordinates the care of the very ill or infirm who have multiple doctors in various specialties.
